Celebrating Arab American Women Authors During National Reading Month: Our Book Recommendations Series -Part 1

March is National Reading Month, a time dedicated to promoting and celebrating the joys of reading. This annual event was created to encourage people of all ages to make reading a daily habit and to recognize the importance of literacy in our lives. Whether you’re an avid reader or just starting to discover the world of books, there’s never been a better time to dive into a good book and celebrate the power of reading.

The origins of National Reading Month can be traced back to the National Education Association (NEA) and its Read Across America campaign. Read Across America was launched in 1997 as a way to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and promote literacy among children. Over the years, it has grown into a month-long celebration of reading that is observed in schools, libraries, and homes across the country.

While there are many authors, Arab American women authors have made significant contributions to the literary world, telling their stories and experiences through their unique perspectives. Whether the genre is a children’s story, self-improvement, fiction, or non-fiction, these writers have explored the complexities of identity, culture, and belonging, challenging stereotypes and offering new insights into the Arab American experience. In honor of National Reading Month, we have some great recommendations of books written by Arab American Women authors that we will bring to you each week.

Our first recommendation is a children’s book titled “All About Weather,” written by our very own AAWBC President Huda Harajli (@hudaharajli_teaching). “All About Weather” is an engaging and informative children’s book perfect for young readers, ages 2-5, who are curious about the world around them. This beautifully illustrated book introduces children to the basics of weather, including the different types of clouds, precipitation, temperature, and seasons.

“From the warm, balmy days of the summer climate to the cold, crisp nights of winter, kids will learn all about the four seasons, as well as how clouds form, why it rains, what causes a rainbow and storms, and so much more.”

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or librarian, “All About Weather” is a wonderful addition to any child’s bookshelf, which is why it is one of our first recommendations. It is a great resource for teaching children about the science of weather and is sure to inspire a love of learning in young readers.
