Celebrating Arab American Women Authors During National Reading Month: Our Book Recommendations Series -Part 3

In honor of National Reading Month, we have some great recommendations of books written by Arab American Women authors that we will bring to you.

This week we recommend author, Aya Khalil.

Aya Khalil is an award-winning author and accomplished journalist based in Ohio. Aya’s writing is both lyrical and accessible, with vivid descriptions that transport readers. She is a proud Egyptian-American, and her work often reflects her dual heritage, exploring themes of identity, belonging, cultural exchange, and family.

Her first book, “The Arabic Quilt,” was published in 2020 and quickly gained critical acclaim. The book tells the story of a young girl named Kanzi who is struggling to adjust to life in the United States after emigrating from Egypt. After a rough day at school, Kanzi wraps herself in the beautiful Arabic quilt her teita (grandma) in Cairo gave her and writes a poem in Arabic about the quilt. The next day her teacher sees the poem and suggests the entire class create a “quilt” (a paper collage) of all the students’ names in Arabic, getting the class excited. By the end of the day, Kanzi’s most treasured reminder of her old home provides a pathway for acceptance in her new one. “The Arabic Quilt” is a beautifully illustrated and emotionally resonant book that touches on themes of identity, family, and the power of community. It has been praised for its nuanced and authentic portrayal of Arab and Muslim culture and its message of inclusion and diversity.

Aya’s latest book, “The Night Before Eid,” is a beautiful and heartwarming tale of faith, family, tradition, and the spirit of generosity. The story follows a young boy named Zain as he helps his Mama and Teita prepare food for Eid, which marks the end of the month of Ramadan. Together with Mama and Teita, Zain follows his family’s recipe and brings to life Eid songs and prayers, pharaonic history, and the melodies and tastes of his Egyptian heritage. This Muslim holiday story, featuring a delicious ka’ak recipe, is a satisfying addition to a joyful and expansive Eid.

By promoting understanding and empathy through her writing and public speaking, Aya Khalil is making a valuable contribution to the Arab community. Her work is sure to resonate with readers of all ages and backgrounds, and her passion for promoting Arab voices and stories is a welcome addition to the literary landscape. Her message of inclusion and diversity is more important than ever.
